About the Department

The Department of B.Sc. brings together the Departments of Economics, Mathematics and Data Analytics to jointly deliver the B.Sc. (Economics, Mathematics and Data Analytics) programme, with a deep specialisation in Economics, under the Karnataka State Education Policy 2024. The three departments work in close collaboration, combining rigorous theoretical grounding with applied, hands-on training so that students develop as evidence-driven thinkers equipped to engage with real-world economic, quantitative and data-related challenges. Through shared workshops, seminars, research forums and industry engagement, the departments create a multidisciplinary learning environment that connects classroom instruction to practical, real-world application. Together, they prepare graduates who are analytically sound, technically skilled and ready for both further study and professional practice.

Department of Economics
The Department of Economics, together with the Departments of Mathematics and Data Analytics, jointly offers the B.Sc. (Economics, Mathematics and Data Analytics) programme. Constituting the intellectual core of this collaboration, the department provides students with a rigorous grounding in economic theory and applied practice, preparing them to engage critically with the forces that shape markets, institutions, and public life. Advanced coursework sharpens analytical and critical thinking skills, while internships, seminars, case studies, and independent research ensure meaningful engagement with real-world challenges. The department regularly organises workshops, policy debates, open mic sessions, project presentations, and conferences, providing students with platforms to articulate informed perspectives, engage with contemporary economic issues, and develop the voice and confidence of future policy thinkers.

Department of Mathematics
The Department of Mathematics, together with the Departments of Economics and Data Analytics, jointly offers the B.Sc. (Economics, Mathematics and Data Analytics) programme. Operating from the conviction that mathematical thinking is a distinct and powerful way of understanding the world, the department provides the rigorous quantitative foundation upon which the entire programme rests. Students develop computational proficiency alongside the capacity for abstract reasoning and precise logical argumentation — competencies indispensable across economics, data science, and beyond. The department regularly organises workshops, problem-solving competitions, open mic sessions, project presentations, and conferences, fostering a culture of intellectual curiosity where students are challenged to think deeply, question boldly, and discover the elegance that mathematics brings to complex problems.

Department of Data Analytics
The Department of Data Analytics, together with the Departments of Economics and Mathematics, jointly offers the B.Sc. (Economics, Mathematics and Data Analytics) programme. Guided by the belief that data is only as valuable as the decisions it informs, the department equips students with the technical expertise and applied experience to excel in a data-driven world. Through hands-on training and project-based learning across diverse real-world sectors, students build strong competencies in analytical thinking, practical execution, and evidence-based decision making. The department regularly organises workshops on AI-powered tools and technologies including Python, R, SQL, and Power BI, industry seminars, open mic sessions, data challenges, and conferences, connecting students with the cutting edge of artificial intelligence and machine learning, real-world problems, and professional communities that are shaping the future of AI-driven data analytics.

Vision

  • To form thinkers of rigour, curiosity, conscience, and integrity, rooted in evidence and scientific reasoning.
  • To prepare graduates who engage the questions that matter from the local to the global, with empathy and the will to act for the betterment of society and people.

Mission

  • To provide a rigorous foundation in economic theory, mathematical reasoning, and applied data analysis, training students to integrate these three disciplines in addressing real-world problems.
  • To cultivate analytical depth and intellectual independence through evidence-based coursework, supervised research, and engagement with industry, government, and academic partners.
  • To prepare graduates who think critically, reason quantitatively, and act with ethical conviction in addressing the questions that shape economic and social life.

Message From HOD

Mr. Vinay Pradeep C, Head of the Department of B.Sc.

“In my years as a mathematician, I believe that true learning begins with curiosity, a restless, burning desire to question, investigate with scientific rigour, and uncover the truth, and it is that spirit that transforms any human into a thinker, and not only transforms you but also the world you constantly interact with. This may eat into your time in the real world, but if this is a naturally driven process, you will truly enjoy it, and you may even experience time slowing down, much like Einstein's Theory of Relativity. I strongly believe that this approach can really take anyone to greater heights in their area of interest, and when it is grounded in strong moral values and a sense of responsibility towards others, you will not just achieve success, you will be a true contribution to society.”

Masters atLondon School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)

“My time at SJCC strengthened me in ways I hadn't expected at the time of admission. The courses offered were intellectually stimulating, especially the practical ones in R and Python, which built strong foundations for the work I do today. The department had always been supportive in discussing future plans, exploring research avenues, or providing guidance about postgraduate studies. I also met some bright, like-minded peers in my cohort with whom I continue to discuss research questions and academic literature even today. What I valued the most about economics at SJCC is that it always instilled a sense of curiosity — something I think is very relevant in academia today.”

“The B.Sc. Economics Programme helped me build a more structured way of thinking about economic problems. Along with theory, learning tools like R, Python, and Data Visualisation made concepts more practical and relevant. The Programme improved how I work with data and interpret results. Three years of interactive learning helped me become more comfortable with quantitative and analytical thinking. Overall, it gave me a good base for exploring further studies and career options.”
