About OBE at SJCC

St. Joseph's College of Commerce (SJCC) introduced the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) framework in 2017 as part of its commitment to enhancing academic quality and aligning with evolving national accreditation standards. Over the years, the institution progressively strengthened its OBE ecosystem through curriculum redesign, faculty capacity building, CO–PO–PSO mapping, assessment reforms, and ERP integration. Building on this foundation, effective institution-wide implementation commenced from the academic year 2024–25, supported by a fully integrated digital OBE framework.

Today, OBE is embedded across every stage of the academic process—from syllabus design and teaching-learning plans to assessments, digital valuation, attainment analysis, and Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI). SJCC's ERP-enabled system integrates Course Outcomes (COs), Programme Outcomes (POs), Programme Specific Outcomes (PSOs), Bloom's Taxonomy, and competency mapping to measure learning outcomes objectively and transparently. The framework also incorporates direct and indirect assessments, enabling evidence-based academic decisions and continuous enhancement of curriculum, pedagogy, and student learning. Through this structured and technology-driven approach, SJCC ensures that every graduate develops the knowledge, skills, values, and professional competencies required for lifelong learning and global employability.

Introduction

Outcome-Based Education (OBE) is an integral part of the academic philosophy at St. Joseph's College of Commerce (SJCC), guiding the institution towards delivering meaningful, measurable, and learner-centred education. Consistent with the Jesuit tradition of forming individuals who are intellectually competent, ethically grounded, socially committed, and globally responsible, OBE ensures that every academic programme contributes to the holistic development of students.

At SJCC, learning extends beyond the acquisition of knowledge to the development of critical thinking, problem-solving ability, ethical values, leadership, communication skills, and social responsibility. Clearly defined learning outcomes guide curriculum design, teaching methodologies, assessment practices, and continuous academic improvement, ensuring that students progressively achieve the competencies expected from their chosen programme.

The OBE framework also promotes transparency by enabling students to understand what they are expected to learn, how their learning will be assessed, and the skills they will acquire upon graduation. Through continuous evaluation, feedback, and quality enhancement initiatives, SJCC fosters an engaging learning environment that prepares graduates for higher education, professional careers, entrepreneurship, research, and responsible citizenship. This outcome-oriented approach reflects the institution's commitment to academic excellence while remaining true to its Jesuit mission of educating individuals who will contribute positively to society.

The OBE Framework

The TREE Framework at St. Joseph’s College of Commerce represents the Outcome-Based Education structure that connects all levels of academic design and delivery in a logical hierarchy: Vision → Mission → Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs) → Programme Outcomes (POs) → Programme Specific Outcomes (PSOs) → Course Outcomes (COs). It ensures that every course contributes to broader programme goals and ultimately to the institutional vision. This structured alignment enables clarity in learning expectations, transparent assessment, and continuous improvement. By linking curriculum, teaching, and evaluation through measurable outcomes, the TREE Framework ensures a coherent, student-centred, and quality-driven academic system across all programmes.

OBE Implementation Framework

Vision (Institutional)

To create a just, secular and democratic society especially in the service of the poor, the oppressed and the marginalized.

Mission (Institutional)

St. Joseph's College of Commerce seeks to be the place where the search for knowledge complements a sense of responsibility to the life of the community, where understanding is coupled with commitment, and where academic excellence goes with the cultivation of virtue.
The College seeks to be a place which sustains women and men in their pursuit of education and fosters the conviction that life is lived well only when it is lived generously in the service of others.

Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs)

Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs) are defined separately for every Undergraduate and Postgraduate programme and are presented in Section 3. Each programme has four PEOs aligned with the institutional Vision and Mission, stakeholder expectations, graduate attributes, and discipline-specific requirements. While the PEOs are programme-specific, they collectively emphasize academic excellence, professional competence, ethical leadership, social responsibility, entrepreneurship, and lifelong learning, providing the foundation for Programme Outcomes (POs), Programme Specific Outcomes (PSOs), and Course Outcomes (COs) within the Outcome-Based Education framework.

Programme Outcomes (POs)

Programme Outcomes (POs) are defined for every Undergraduate and Postgraduate programme at St. Joseph's College of Commerce and are presented in Section 3 under the respective programme pages. Each programme comprises 10 Programme Outcomes (PO1–PO10) that describe the knowledge, skills, competencies, values, and graduate attributes expected of students upon graduation. Aligned with the College's Vision and Mission, Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs), and the principles of Outcome-Based Education, the POs provide a common framework for curriculum design, teaching-learning, assessment, and continuous quality improvement across all academic programmes.

Programme Specific Outcomes (PSOs)

Programme Specific Outcomes (PSOs) are defined for every Undergraduate and Postgraduate programme at St. Joseph's College of Commerce and are presented in Section 3 under the respective programme pages. Each programme comprises 2 Programme Specific Outcomes (PSO11–PSO12) that reflect the discipline-specific knowledge, skills, and professional competencies expected of graduates. The PSOs complement the Programme Outcomes (POs) and ensure that every programme develops specialized capabilities aligned with academic, industry, and societal expectations.

Course Outcomes (COs)

Course Outcomes (COs) have been defined for all courses offered across Undergraduate and Postgraduate programmes. A total of Course Outcomes have been developed, with an average of COs per course. All COs are mapped to the respective Programme Outcomes (POs), Programme Specific Outcomes (PSOs), Bloom's Taxonomy levels, and competency levels through the College ERP, enabling automated attainment analysis, outcome tracking, and continuous quality improvement.

Jesuit Identity & Values-Based Outcomes

How do the POs connect to Jesuit Education values? *
SJCC’s Programme Outcomes are deeply rooted in Jesuit educational philosophy, integrating Cura Personalis by fostering holistic student development through knowledge, skills, and ethical grounding. The principle of Magis is reflected in POs that encourage excellence, critical thinking, and continuous improvement. Reflection and contemplation in action are embedded through analytical and problem-solving outcomes, enabling students to evaluate real-world business scenarios thoughtfully. Further, POs emphasize service and justice, preparing students to act with social responsibility, ethical integrity, and a commitment to inclusive and sustainable development. This alignment ensures graduates are not only competent professionals but also conscientious individuals dedicated to societal well-being.

Student Awareness & Resources

How are students oriented to COs and POs at the start of each semester? *
At the beginning of each semester, students are formally oriented to Course Outcomes (COs) and Programme Outcomes (POs) through structured course induction sessions conducted by faculty. During these sessions, instructors explain the relevance of COs, their mapping to POs, and how they align with assessments (CIA, MTT, and ESE). COs and POs are also shared through course handouts, lesson plans, and the Learning Management System (LMS) for continuous reference. Faculty further reinforce outcome awareness through classroom discussions, assessments, and feedback, ensuring that students clearly understand expected learning goals and their role in achieving them.
