OSA Activities
To begin with the events for the academic year, on 6th July 2019 the OSA conducted a photography workshop by the renowned photographer Anup Kattukaran. The association arranged a talk by Rohith Saraswathi on 16th July. Followed by this OSA also conducted the annual debate on 7th August highlighting the importance of the newly designed budget and its impact on all the citizens. The Annual OSA Quiz competition took place on 10th August,2019.
25th August was celebrated as OSA Day at college and this marked the Annual General Meet and the Election of the office bearers for the year 2019 – 2020. As usual, the OSA organised a past vs. present basketball match to celebrate the occasion.
The OSA celebrated Teachers Day on 13 th September at KSCA. The theme for the day was “Dress like a Child.” A lot of fun filled activities were organized for teaching, non-teaching and support staff which was followed by lunch.
Keeping in mind the topics of personal growth and success, the alumni also conducted workshops by Ms. Sujata Patil and Ms. Shivani Mundhra on 13 th and 18th November, 2019 respectively. A Mindfulness Yoga Workshop led by Instructor Rajiv S. was the final event for the year and all these workshops truly had a positive impact on all the participants.
On 27th November, 2019, the Alumni Association conducted the most awaited prestigious event of the year ‘The Magis Awards’. This day is recognised as one of the proudest moments for all Josephites as we celebrate the leaders and inspirational personalities who have created an impact and left behind a mark for years to come. The Alumni took this opportunity to present Salil Shetty and Rahul Dravid with the Magis Award for Lifetime Achievement and also presented the remarkable Dilshad Master and B M Giriraj with the Magis Award for Significant Achievement. Apart from the aforementioned programmes, the OSA Gala for the year was held on 6th December, 2019 in association with Catholic Club. The event was conducted to promote the OSA and its activities.
The OSA also helped the Ladies Secretaries of the student council in fulfilling their dream of installing a Pad Dispenser on campus, which remains the highlight of the year for all the girls. The inauguration took place on 9th January, 2020 with the OSA Batch of ’91 as the chief guests for the occasion.
OSA also conducted certificate courses on Tally and GST from November 2019 to February 2020 which benefitted 27 students.
The activities for the academic year of 2019 – 2020 came to an end with an insightful session on the Union Budget conducted on 4th February, 2020, featuring Mr. K R Rahul Vasudev as the guest speaker for the programme. The speaker helped the commerce students understand the important aspects of the budget.
The Old Students’ Association (or the Alumni Association) of St. Joseph’s College of Commerce is a closely-knit, active community that conducts several activities throughout the academic year. The Alumni Association is an integral part of the college. The association’s activities are aimed at bridging the gap between current and past students. The new team of office bearers took over OSA on 19th August 2018. On the same day OSA organized a basketball match where the present college team played against the OSA team. The OSA celebrated Teachers’ Day in a grand manner at Catholic Club on 15th of September, 2018. All the teaching, non-teaching and support staff of SJCC were invited for this event. Dr. Lily David who was retiring in November, 2018 – after 32 glorious years of service was honoured by the OSA during this event. All the staff members had a memorable afternoon. OSA this year instituted the prestigious ‘Magis Awards’ to honour the achievements of the alumni.
The ceremony was held in the college premises on 16th November, 2018. The award for significant achievement was given to Mr. Anup Kattukaran (2004 batch). Maj. Geetha Adhikari and Mr. Atul Kattukaran shared the award for the 2008 batch. Magis Award for Lifetime Achievement was given to Mr. Mohan Das Pai (1979 batch) and Mr. Irfan Rasack (1973 batch). OSA Gala was successfully held on 14th December, 2018 in association with Catholic Club, to promote OSA and its activities. In order to facilitate a healthy atmosphere of debate and dialogue in college, the OSA started the Annual OSA Debate Competition. The annual OSA debate was held on 21st January 2019.
The teams debated on the dynamics of e-commerce industry and the underlying intentions of the central government in the election year. The OSA team also organized talks on various issues throughout the academic year. On 14th November, 2018, Mr. Phil Abernathy delivered a talk on ‘Are You Ready for the World?’. On 19th November, 2018 Mr. Babu Jayendran spoke on “Emerging Technologies.” On 23rd January Mr. Kiran Boal spoke on Money and Mutual Funds. The members of the OSA took an interest in the college activities by participating in the Spiel Run They organized a fun Zumba session before the Spiel run.
The alumni members through their inclusion in the Board of Studies (BOS), Academic Council and Governing Body of the Institution, give valuable suggestions on quality enhancement, curriculum, teaching-learning practices and placements. OSA sponsors the Best Outgoing Student Alumni Award every year and gives scholarships to deserving students to motivate, inspire and recognize academic excellence. The College wishes to thank all the office bearers of OSA for their tireless efforts towards their Alma Mater.
The OSA started the year with the Annual General Meeting on September 10th, 2017 and the new managing committee took over. The OSA organised a past vs present students basketball match, which saw participation in huge numbers from students of all ages. The OSA celebrated Teachers’ Day in a grand manner at KSCA Club on the 16th of September, 2017. The OSA Christmas Party, in association with Catholic Club was held on December 22nd, 2017 to spread the Christmas message of joy and hope. The Old Students Association (OSA) of SJCC conducted their annual debate again this year.
The debate consisted of three rounds namely, written round prelims, verbal prelims and the final round. The topic for the written prelim was “National security is more important than individual privacy”.The best fifteen candidates of the written entries were selected. The topic for the second round was “Is social media slowly killing real talk”. The round was moderated by an alumnus of the college, Mr. Zubair. Contestants put forth their points in a logical manner. At the end of the round, 10 people were selected for the final round. The moderator of the final round was Mr. Shashi Lewis, an alumnus of SJCC. The topic was “Crypto currency: The currency of the future”.
All the participants presented valuable points and their passion was visible. They also received constructive criticism from the judges. The winners of the competition received cash prize. The OSA also organised a talk on the Union Budget on 6th February, 2018. The speaker was Mr. K Raghu, Former President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India, who is also an alumnus of SJCC. The members of the OSA took an interest in the college activities by participating in the Spiel Run held on February 10th, 2018. On occasion of the 1973 batch’s 45th year of graduation on March 10th, 2018 OSA organised a panel discussion for the final year students titled “Gems from the Seniors” with Mr. Irfan Razack, Mr. KG Raghavan and Mr. FR Singhvi.
The discussion helped the students to learn a lot from the experience and collective wisdom of the panellists. Apart from being actively part of the college activities the Alumni Association also supports deserving students by providing scholarships and instituting awards. The college welcomes the new president of the Alumni Association Ms. Kavita Mutthappa and thanks the former president Mr. Vinay Mruthyunjaya for his contribution to the college.
The Alumni Association has been an integral part of the college. The association conducts various activities for the intellectual growth of the students. It is an important stake holder in the college and its advice is sought on important academic matters. The Alumni Association is headed by Mr. CA Vinay Mrithunjaya who has contributed immensely to the academic development of the institution.
This year, the Association held an annual intracollegiate annual quiz competition on August 12th, 2016 to facilitate and imbibe a spirit of competitiveness and camaraderie amongst students.A minimum of 60 teams, comprising of two students in each team, took part in the prelims. Top six teams were selected to take part in the final round. AGM was held on 21st August 2016 along with a inter batch cricket match organised by the Alumni Association. A special “Teacher’s Day” programme was held exclusively for all the staff of the college.
It was an afternoon of fun, games and good food where senior retired teachers also joined in. The evening ended with a Thank you note from Dr. Daniel Fernandes, SJ, to the Alumni members and Mr. Vinay Mrithunjaya, President Alumni Association in particular. Alumni Association organized a guest lecture on GST for the students on 11th November 2016 by Mr. Venkatramani, Chartered Accountant. The association also participated in the Spiel Run as part of college’s Annual Intercollegiate Sporting Event.
An Inter Class Debate was held on 20th January 2017 on the topic ‘Demonetisation and its Impact on Indian Economy’. Winners were awarded cash prizes. Ms. Kavita Muthappa, Secretary of the Alumni Association, took part in a panel discussion on topic ‘Business Ethics’. A contribution of around two lakh rupees was made towards scholarships for students. The association also sponsored the customary award for Best Outgoing Boy and Best Outgoing Girl Student 2016-17.
The Alumni Association is a group of old students who are motivated by their love for their Alma Mater. The President – Mr. Vinay Mruthyunjaya and his core committee has put in lot of effort to infuse vibrancy in the Alumni Association. They had met several times during the year to deliberate on the course of activities which could be of help to the Institution – to be undertaken by the Alumni Association. The Association has been instrumental in organising important activities throughout the academic year.
The highlights of the activities conducted in the collage are—The Alumni Association conducted the AGM on 15th August 2015. This was attended by about 175 old students. The retired teachers were felicitated at this meeting. It was decided that the AGM will be henceforth held on 15th August every year. The association organised a special address on “Overview of Global Investors Meet - GIM 2016” by S. Rangappa KAS, F.C.A Chartered Accountant, Special Deputy Commissioner, Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board, Government of Karnataka, on Friday the 29th January 2016.
A lecture on Union Budget 2016 by V. Raghu Raman, Chartered Accountant, SJCC Alumni was held on 1st March, 2016. Several input sessions on “Campus to Industry” initiatives of SJCC were held. The Alumni also assisted in organizing various student activities such as Dhwani, Chanakya and SPIEL. The Association helped the Student Council with sponsorships for student activities. A contribution of Rs. 1,50,000/- was made towards student scholarships during the academic year 2015 -16.
It also sponsored the customary Alumni award for Best Outgoing Boy and Girl student of 2016. A generous contribution of Rs.50,000/- each, was made to the families of Late Mr. Arockia Dass and Late Mr. Nanjundappa in recognition of their services to the Institution.
SJCC Alumni Association strives in its mission to strengthen the ‘alumni to alumni’ connections and nurture a meaningful relationship with their alma mater. The key objective of the association is to closely work with the alma mater and to encourage and support the college and students through various activities and initiatives. The present team is headed by Mr. Vinay Mruthyunjaya, who has been consistently coordinating various academic and co-curricular activities on the campus.
The team generously contributed towards students’ welfare programme. An amount of Rs. 1,80,000 was contributed towards Need cum Merit scholarship. They have been actively involved in raising resources for the annual fests throughout the academic year and supported the promotion of education in the rural areas. They were also empanelled in selecting the Best Outgoing students for the academic year 2014-15.
