The Department of English at SJCC began hosting the Annual Republic Day Lecture from 2019 onwards with a clear objective of engaging the public on ideas of social importance such as democracy, pluralism, and the idea of India. The past speakers of this public lecture series include Prof. Rajendra Chenni, Prof. Anand Teltumbde, Prof. G N Devy, Ms. Patricia Mukhim and Prof. Shiv Visvanathan.
The fifth edition of the Annual Republic Day Lecture Series was hosted by the Department of English on February 4, 2023. Prof. (Dr.) Shiv Vishvanathan, Indian public intellectual and social scientist, was the speaker for the year who delivered a lecture on ‘Ethics, Earth, and the Anthropocene’. There were over 150 people in attendance which included scholars, researchers, teachers, activists, artists, students, and parents. In his lecture, Prof. Vishvanathan explored the need for a new language and a new paradigm to understand and articulate the contemporary human condition. For this, we need stories and myths that remind us about our relationship with the earth. ‘As many folklores are on the verge of extinction, we need a new way of making memories come alive, a new way of speaking with the past and future’, he added. He also urged universities to encourage plurality of ideas, playfulness, experimentation, dialogues and most importantly, dissent.
The Annual Republic Day Lecture Series, hosted by the Department of English, is now into its fourth edition. Every year a renowned public intellectual is invited to deliver a lecture on contemporary socio-political and cultural challenges. The earlier editions of this lecture series has featured Prof. Rajendra Chenni, Prof. Anand Teltumbde and Prof. G N Devy. This year the lecture titled ‘: Socio- political and Cultural Challenges in Contemporary India – A Personal Reflection’ was delivered by Ms. Patricia Mukhim, a renowned journalist and editor of Shillong Times.

He stated that a desire for a transformed Annual Republic Day Lecture 2020 – 2021 The Department of English conducted the third edition of the Annual Republic Day Lecture Series, titled “The Third Decade: New Horizons of Expectations” on 18th January, 2021 as a hybrid event, both on campus and on SJCC’s official Youtube channel. Prof. G. N. Devy, renowned thinker and cultural critic was the speaker for the event. Prof. Devy placed his talk in the context of understanding the foundation of a republic. He stated that a desire for a transformed world is the idea of a republic. He offered an analysis of the prevailing world situation in relation to environment, politics, frontiers of knowledge and the human capacity for action. Apart from SJCC students, there were a number of participants from different universities across Bangalore and India. The relevance of the talk in the present political context was noted in the post-talk discussions. The implications of re-imagining AI through reframing existing languages were also discussed.
On 15th February, 2020, the English Department invited Prof. Anand Teltumbde, a distinguished scholar and civil rights activist to deliver the guest lecture for Annual Republic Day Lecture – Second episode. ‘Caste and Contemporary India: Perspectives on socio-cultural and political challenges’ was the theme for the lecture. Mr. S. Mariswamy (Retd. IPS Officer and Educationist) and Ms. Cynthia Stephen (Writer and Dalit Activist) responded to the lecture.
The Department of English had its inaugural lecture of Annual Republic Day Lecture Series on 24th January, 2019. Prof. Rajendra Chenni, a prominent writer, thinker and activist elaborated on the topic ‘Crisis in Democracy and Liberalism – A Possible Response’. The two-hour lecture saw an audience on over 100 people, from different public forums. Prof. Chenni addressed the idea of democracy being implemented in India with an essential sense of our own traditional beliefs and lifestyles. He related this to the anxiety of the constitution-makers regarding the success of the republic of India. Giving the example of mobilisation of rural women in Karnataka moving the government towards liquor ban, he identified the differences between the reality of electoral democracy and that of individual level of democracy. He used many examples to demonstrate how political statements made at the individual or community level are sometimes more relevant than even central level of politics. Prof. Chenni expressed his firm belief in the need to end the tradition of silence that greets every form of polarisation of political views in the country. He stressed on the importance of making our voices strong by rooting ourselves in native histories, to truly realise the meaning of democracy in the nation.

Media and Society Lecture Series
August 24th , 2021
The term ‘media’ has an expansive meaning in today’s socio-political and cultural
context. It may refer to a piece of paper on which news is printed or to a political
advertisement that pops-up while browsing the latest TV show on the internet. Media
acts as a tool to manufacture consent and at the same time, it is the very space where
such ‘manufacturing’ can be resisted. Hence, understanding media is crucial to
understanding the modern world that is saturated with information. The Media and
Society Lecture series has been designed to help students understand the dimensions
of media and society. The inaugural lecture titled ‘Indian Media Today: The Dynamics of
News Ecosystem’ was delivered by Mr. Hartosh Singh Bal, Political Editor of the
Caravan magazine on 24th August 2021 at 11 am. The lecture was followed by a Q&A
session where our students raised their doubts and concerns regarding how the media
generated discourses, especially the narratives emerging out of the news eco-system,
influence human experiences in modern society.
